What Is Reiki?

Reiki is the Japanese phrase for "universal life energy," or in Hawayo Takata's words, "God-power." The Usui System of Reiki Healing is a hands-on healing practice. Reiki - universal life energy - is channeled through the practitioner's hands for self-treatment or treatment of others. The result of receiving Reiki is enhanced health and well-being - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Five precepts for daily living support health, assist in making choices, and serve as a spiritual and moral guide.

The teachers trained by Hawayo Takata are committed to carrying on the work of their teacher, preserving the faithful practice of the Usui System of Reiki Healing. All have practiced Reiki for more than twenty years. They draw from that depth of experience in their teaching.

Phyllis Furumoto and Paul Mitchell in particular have articulated the aspects and elements implicit in Takata's teaching of the Usui System. The presence of each of these qualities is integral to the full teaching of the system. The aspects focus on healing practice, personal development, spiritual discipline and mystic order. The elements address form of teaching, treatment, spiritual lineage, spiritual precepts, initiation, history, money, oral tradition and symbols.

"In 1980, when I decided to take a journey with my grandmother, Hawayo Takata, I didn't know that this journey would change my life."
